Stipends
The department provides teaching stipends of $24,700 stipend to Ph.D. students during their first year. Beginning with the second year, students focus more fully on their research endeavors. All students in good standing are supported through either teaching or research assistantships in the Department of Chemistry. Tuition is covered by the department for any full-time student who receives teaching assistant or research support. West Virginia University offers health insurance for all graduate teaching assistants and research assistants.
Graduate Fellowships and Scholarships
The department has several graduate fellowships which provide salary supplements to graduate stipends. These fellowships are awarded by the Graduate Studies Committee both as a recruiting tool and as a reward to current graduate students for meritorious performance in teaching, research and service. There is no application process for these fellowships.
Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistants
Teaching assistants receive these awards based on student and faculty evaluations. Each awardee receives a certificate and monetary awards in paychecks. Categories include Advanced G.T.A., First-Year G.T.A., External G.T.A., Undergraduate T.A., and Student Lab Assistant.
Forrest Ferrell Award
This award goes to the teaching assistant who takes the best care of the lab facilities. It is in honor of a former lab manager in the department. The awardee receives a certificate and a cash award in their paycheck.
Eberly College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Teaching Assistant
This award is given to the teaching assistant nominated by department and recognized by the college in a separate ceremony. The awardee receives a certificate and cash award in their paycheck.
John R. Conard Fellowship
Awarded by the department to graduate students based on merit.
C. Eugene Bennett Fellowship
Awarded by the department to graduate students based on merit.
John H. Trotter Graduate Chemistry Scholarship
Awarded by the department to graduate students based on merit.
Herf Supplementary Fellowship
Awarded by the college to Ph.D. students based on department recommendations.
