About
Dr. Arroyo joined the faculty of the Forensic & Investigative Science (FIS) at WVU in the fall of 2016. Dr. Arroyo earned a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Costa Rica (UCR), an M.S. in Forensic Science from Florida International University (FIU) and a Ph.D. in Chemistry/Forensic Track from Florida International University (FIU). Dr. Arroyo was a researcher and associate director of the Forensic and Analytical Toxicology Facility (FATF) at the International Forensic Research Institute (IFRI), Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Florida International University. He has taught graduate courses in the forensic analysis of drugs and hands-on workshops on mass spectrometry, instrumental analysis and forensic chemistry.
Research Interests
Dr. Arroyo’s research interests are forensic analytical and environmental chemistry. Dr. Arroyo’s primary research focus is the characterization and analysis of emerging drugs of abuse, pollutants and environmental stressors. Other areas of interest include the development of rapid methods for field analysis of evidence. Dr. Arroyo’s previous research includes the application of mass spectrometry methods for the characterization and identification of novel psychoactive substances, pesticides and chemical entities in complex biological and non-biological matrices, and the elemental analysis of soils and sediments by Laser Ablation Inductively Couple Plasma Mass Spectrometry. Dr. Arroyo has authored several peer-reviewed scientific publications and has presented over 50 presentations at scientific meetings in North America and overseas.
Special Information
Dr. Arroyo has over 16 years of expertise in applying analytical chemistry to the development of environmental, pharmaceutical, and forensic applications. He has served as instructor of several NIJ funded workshops to improve the practice of current forensic professionals in the USA and abroad.
